Never Shout Never is an American indie/pop band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The group has released three full-length albums and two EPs. The band was first a one-man show with only Christofer Drew who started by posting a few songs on Myspace. Now, the band has a bassist who does vocals (Taylor MacFee) and a drummer who also plays guitar and does vocals (Hayden Kaiser) the band is putting out new music faster than you can say, ‘Never Shout Never is amazing.” With already four albums and four EPs, the band is already in studio with their fifth called, Sunflower. Which will be out, hopefully, some time this year.

(My Opinion)

After a few years, bands change. This is because they want to ‘mature’ their music or they are forced to by record labels. Obviously it’s sad and sucks when a record label wants the band to release music that they want instead of what the band wants. With this being said, I just want to congratulate Never Shout Never for putting out music that they enjoy once again. Never shout Never has definitely changed, no doubt about it. What really bothers me though, is that I’m not exactly sure if I like it or not.

There are things that I really dislike about this album. Usually, the band’s repetition doesn’t bother me, it sounds good and harmless. In songs like, Magic, Life Goes One, and Honey Dew, the repetition gets very annoying very fast. My least favourite song on this album is California Slang because it sounds too different from the rest of the album and to be honest, if the rest of their music is going to sound like that, I don’t think I will be as much of a fan of this band in the future as I am right now. I don’t know how to explain it except that it is very…Odd. Another thing I don’t like is the drumming on most of the songs, it doesn’t sound very smooth to me just choppy and distracting. Christopher Drew’s usual high do-do’s are now boring and sound pretty dead which is kind of depressing. I used to enjoy his do-do’ing.

Some of the songs have really cool intros like, Magic, All Mine, Sorry, Lust, and Honey Dew. I like that Never Shout Never steps out of their comfort zone and make music that is very different from what they have released before. It shows that they are maturing and growing not only as a band but as people too. What really makes me happy is that they still have some of their old touch in the music just to make sure that they don’t piss of their fan base. In songs like, Wrong Side Of Town and All Mine they sounds like they could have been on any of his older albums just with a much fuller sound and a lot more instruments.

Even with the new turn of music, Never Shout Never is a band to listen to. I would recommend it, maybe, with caution to new and old fans just because it isn’t what is expected.
