If You Leave - Daughter

Daughter is an indie/folk band from England. They have created songs that are filled with tales of heartbreak and death that are sung in a sweet, soft tune. Currently, the band has out three EPs-Demos, His Young Heart, and The Wild Youth and one album-If You Leave. Members are: Elena Tonra  (vocals, guitar), Igor Haefeli  (guitar), and Remi Aguilella (drums).

Daughter is the type of band that understands you without trying to. They’re trying to express themselves with their music but along the way they express you too. Or at least, they do for me. If You Leave is a story about heartbreak. It’s about feeding the monster inside of you, something, we all have and realizing that we’re still human. This entire album can easily become the backdrop for a heartfelt tv show drama. (Seriously, close your eyes and you can imagine Human, Amsterdam, Shallow as the music for Grey’s or supernatural or something super intense and heartbreaking movie/tv show.) I know I’ve been handing out high ratings for a lot of albums lately, but this band, Daughter, completely deserve it. And I cannot wait to see them this fall (hopefully).

I adore the way Daughter can make me feel with the single beat of a drum, a few chords from a guitar, and lovely sung high notes. In most of the songs, there’s an echo attached to the vocals which is something I’m very picky about. I can’t stand when songs have an echo that is useless to the song but with Daughter, they pull it off. Everything compliments each other rather than takes away from the songs. I also love how easy it is to relate to their music with lyrics about broken romances in Still with lyrics, “Biting words like a wolf howling. Hate is spitting out each others mouths. But we’re still sleeping like we’re lovers.” And no matter what, people are still human in Human with, “Buried deep within, there’s a human.”

If You Leave by Daughter is a gorgeous album. There’s heartache, love, life, death, and well…Youth and growing up that’s shown throughout the album. I recommend this album to everyone especially to lovers of indie and acoustic music. Favourite songs off of this album are: Still, Human, Youth, and Shallows.

Forever Halloween - The Maine

The Maine  is an American rock band from Tempe, Arizona. Formed in 2007. The band was founded by Pat Kirch (drummer) and Garrett Nickelsen (Bassist) when they were still in high school. Even though they’re from Arizona, the name Maine comes from a song by a very respected band called, Ivory. They got their name from their song, The Coast Of Maine (great song as well). The Maine have four EPs: stay Up, Get Down, …And A Happy New Year,  In Darkness And In Light and Good Love. And 4 albums out: Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, Black And White,  Pioneer and Forever Halloween. Members of the band are: John O’Callaghan (vocals), Jared Monaco (lead guitarist), Kennedy Brock (back up guitarist), Garrett Nickelsen (bass), and Pat Kirch (drums).

(My Opinion)

There’s just so much that I love about Forever Halloween. Actually, there is so much that I love about The Maine, really. But this isn’t about how they’re my favourite band or about how they’re so nice and funny. This is about their newest album and how much is fucking rocks. And about how much they have grown as a band, which is evident with this album. They’re a lot more confident with their sound and the direction they want their music to lead to which is one of the reasons why I love Forever Halloween.

Unfortunately, I don’t really like Fucked Up Kids because I feel like it falls flat especially at the chorus, the drums and guitar seem to be on completely different pages and parts are done a bit sloppily. And although I love Run and it’s one of my favourite songs off of Forever Halloween the transitioning between the chorus and the verse could have been smoother, it’s rushed and a little too sharp.

Fortunately, I love everything else about this album. The guitar duet in Kennedy Curse is phenomenal, it’s dark and haunting in a good way. Hopefully we’ll hear more of it on their next album. Birthday In Los Angeles is a bit different from the rest of the songs because of the song structure and sound. It doesn’t necessarily have the same chorus every time, it changes a bit and the lone ukulele accompanying John’s voice is really delicate and soft. With Blood Red there is an echo coming off of all the instruments and vocals that really compliments the song and the creepiness that is intended for it. I also love the use of different percussion instruments and clapping, etc. that are enclosed in songs, Blood Red, Happy, and Take What You Can Carry. Also, These Four Words compared to You Left Me, This Is The End, and, I’m Sorry is a lot darker and sadder with only the piano to emphasis just how sad and broken the song is meant to be. It’s beautiful and heart-wrenching which I think makes the song that more great. (Also, I can’t take this song very seriously because of the line: “I really should just go home and play with myself”. It’s too funny!)

Forever Halloween is pretty much gold. Every song has its own creepy, cool, unique theme to it that comes together to make this album a whole with a Halloween feeling. Off of the album my favourite songs are: Run, Blood Red, Kennedy Curse, Love & Drugs and Happy. But I love almost all of them. I recommend this album to everyone, especially people who love alternative rock and people who love creepy, Halloween-like music and everything in-between.

Able Bodies - From Indian Lakes

From Indian Lakes is from Yosemite Valley, California. The band released their debut full-length record, “The Man With Wooden Legs” in the Winter of 2009. The songs that were spawned out of this release reflect the bands’ collective maturity and purpose while being surrounded by music that is otherwise derivative and lacking in any sort of defining positive characteristics. Since their initial debut, the band has been working endlessly, playing countless shows throughout the US as well as dedicating time in the studio in preparation for their upcoming full-length. The next release, entitled Able Bodies, is already garnering wide acclaim with both longtime fans as well as those who have just recently discovered the band.

Able Bodies moves several steps forward in their maturity and depth, while still retaining the aggression, passion and darkness of their debut. Current band members are: Joey Vannuchi’s (vocals, guitar), Enrique Gutierrez (Keys), Justin Stanphill (Guitar), and Guy Samuelson (Drums).

(My Opinion)

Funny, the first time I listened to a song by this band, I thought they sucked. Of course, now, I’ve come to my senses and realized just how amazing they are. This album is pretty much perfect. I mean, really. There are some unpredictable songs on this album like Anything and We Follow. As listeners really get into We Follow, the instruments except for drums and a random guitar string or two stop playing and a small, heartbreaking monologue comes out which is sung by lead singer, Joey Vannuchi. Throughout the album, there are a lot of different song structures that listeners don’t normally hear. Your Son doesn’t necessarily have a chorus, it’s just a story about pain and loss which I think is a hauntingly amazing song. Actually, this is an amazing album and I think everyone should go buy it. Right now.

What makes me fall in love with this album over and over again is the fact that everything about it is so easy to love. From the bass drum that just somehow completes a song to the lyrics that compliment the sound. The lyrics hold a lot of meaning not only to the band, but I also think to the listeners, they’re easy to relate to especially I Don’t Know You and Till I Can Walk by talking about love, happiness, and just how horrible the world can be sometimes. Another thing I love about Able Bodies is that everyone gets noticed, everyone gets a part that shows off their different talents. What I mean by this is that in: Paintings, Till I Can Walk, We Are Sick, and We Follow the drummer really lets it all out and goes, well, sort of wild and I love it. In: Your Son, We Follow, Stay Outside, Breaking My Bones the vocalist gets sudden (sort of) solos and can hit really high notes that show his strength and experience with his voice. In most songs, the bass gets a cool, unique duet with mostly the drums which is a plus because rarely is the bass even heard. And of course, I adore the guitar parts and solos that are in almost every song.

Able Bodies  is something unexpected. It’s raw and talented and just…beautiful. I recommend this album to everyone, especially to indie rock lovers because this is a beautiful album about life and how fucked everything is. Off of Able Bodies, my favourite songs are: We Follow, I Don’t Know You, Till I Can Walk, and Paintings. but I love every song so just listen to them all. Or buy the album and see them live!

Illuminate - Lydia

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus because of a fight that was between Steve McGraw and Leighton Antelman (the two people who started the band). In the end, before their last tour it was announced that Lydia would be breaking up. Luckily, it was only a hiatus instead. Lydia has released five albums-This December, it’s one more and I’m free, Illuminate, Assailants, Paint it golden, and Devil.  Current band members are-Leighton Antelman (Vocals),  Justin Camacho (Guitar) Matt Keller (Keyboard), and Craig Taylor (drums, percussions). Past band members are- Dustin Forsgren (Bass Guitar), Maria Sais De Sicilia (vocals, Keyboard. Now in Bears Of Manitou),Loren Brinton ( Drums),Evan Aranbul (Bass Guitar),Ethan Koozer (Guitar. Now in Gates),Jed Dunning ( Bass Guitar),Mindy White ( vocals, Keyboard. Now in States), Steve McGraw (Guitar. Now in The Saturn Hands).

(My Opinion)

A beautiful rainy day near the sea. That’s what this album brings into my mind. It’s sad yet wonderful and of course this is a masterpiece. With smooth, rhythmic tunes sung with perfect execution by lead singer Leighton Altman and back up vocalist Mindy White. Throughout the album, lead guitarist Steve McGraw shows his talent and experience with large amounts of solos that are each completely different from the other. With so much going on, Lydia masters quite stunningly an expedition of talent and strength. This just might be their best album yet.

Singing back up is Mindy White, although her voice is beautiful, it doesn’t sway me the way that it’s intended to. To me, her voice is a little flat especially with her leading the song, Now the One You Once Loved is Leaving.

Most songs start off with a lone sound; vocals, a guitar solo, or a piano solo. In my opinion, This is Twice Now and Hospital are the best done. Especially when the whole band suddenly jumps in, in both songs. In song many songs, Loren Brinton excels with his drumming. He keeps pace with the feel of the music, the sound of the songs. Also, the bass played in Fate is absolutely beautiful. It fits with the music but doesn’t get lost in it. With all of that being said, it’s axiomatic that the songs on this album are very smooth and moving. Every musical note fits together seamlessly, maybe even better than December, their debut album (which is really good as well). I especially love how different All  I See. It’s very simple and yet complex with the lone guitar accompanying Leighton and haunting lyrics, All I See Scares Me Cause No One Waits Forever.

When I saw Lydia back in April, they completely blew my mind, they opened with This is Twice Now and ended the night with Hospital (Which I think they did just because I got everyone in the front and middle to yell Hospital over and over again.) It was their first time headlining in Canada and the show completely sold out. It’s hard to pick out my favourite songs from an album that is so moving like this one because they are all special and unique in their own ways. But I certainly love This is Twice Now, Hospital, All I See, and One more Day and recommend this album to everyone and maybe start this album off with those four songs.

Devil - Lydia

Lydia is an indie rock pop band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus. They are also, currently ON TOUR SO GO BUY TICKETS.

(My Opinion)

Lydia’s approach to music this time around leans more towards new territory. Comparing this album to their others, it’s evident that they are  branching out towards lighter, more playful music. Although it’s still clear that Hailey is still (and might always be) the inspiration for some of these songs, there seems to be a more vague sense of romance. Nonetheless, I love this album and I cannot wait for them to come to Toronto. And believe me when I say that you need this album on ‘favourites’ list.

Almost every song is amazing, blown-away worthy songs. And although I love their music and most likely always will, Lydia has added a few irritating things to their sound. One of these things is the whole, “oh woah woah oh oh’ bit. I’ll admit, for some songs, like, Knee Deep and The Exit  it helps and adds to it but for most songs it seems too over-used and forced and leaves me feeling annoyed. This is the case with, Runaway and Hurry Back Tonight. At first, I didn’t mind it but after two minutes of the very repetitive, “oh woah woah”  and, “come on, come on” I had to change it before my head exploded.

Now, onto the Happier parts of the album! Lydia is known for their exquisite talents of painting lovely, delicate, (yet somewhat a little dark) pictures with lyrics about romance, in songs From A Tire Swing, and Hurry Back Tonight,  battling your inner demons in Devil and Knee Deep as well as, of course, learning your shit like in Holidays. An example of the lovely pictures they can pain is with Back To Bed and how I literally feel like getting back to bed with my girlfriend and sleeping for days at a time. It’s a song that is full of playfulness and love with a hint of adventure.  The Exit, Devil, Take Your Time, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing start off with soft, mellowed out intros that work their way into a fast pace and into their listener’s soul.

Everything blends into each other, the guitars and bass compliment the vocals and the drums don’t over power the sound. At some point in Take Your Time  I fall in love with the guitarist and the unique sounds that Justin Camacho plays. I adore Lydia which is why I buy their music without having to listen to it first.

As always, a beautiful album made by a talented band. You don’t need to listen to their old stuff to truly appreciate their music and unique sound. I love all these songs but I keep getting Devil, Back To Bed, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing stuck in my head (which is fine by me). I would definitely say that these are my favourite songs and I recommend this album to everyone. Whether you mostly just listen to rap, pop, indie, punk, etc. Lydia will somehow touch your heart.

Brothers (Deluxe Version) - The Black Keys

The Black Keys is an American rock band formed in Akron, Ohio in 2001. The group consists of Dan Auerbach (guitar, vocals) and Patrick Carney (drums). The group began as an independent act founded after the duo dropped out of college, and they eventually emerged among a second wave of popular garage rock revival artists from the 2000s. Currently, The Black Keys have released seven albums- The Big Come Up, Theakfreakness, Rubber Factory, Magic Potion, Attack & Release, Brothers, and El Camino.

(My Opinion)

I don’t care if you’re a hardcore hip hop/whatever you are into lover. The Black Keys is a band for everyone. With beats that just make you want to dance and act like a bad ass how can you not enjoy their music?

I can truly say that there is nothing that I dislike about this album.

Every song starts off with an awesome instrumental intro followed by the band’s easy-going tunes and vocals. Speaking of vocals,  Dan Auerbach’s singing is very smooth and welcoming by not only low and deep notes but also singing very high notes. His voice sounds like a lullaby that draws you in on a cold night. I really like that all of the songs tell an actual story about past romances and futures one, like, Too Afraid To Love You and Next Girl,  family, for example, Unknown Brother and life, Sinister Kid and These Days. These songs, like every other song on this album has catchy, memorable lyrics that even if you’ve heard them once, you would know which song from which. Even though all the songs on brothers has the same song structure, the different instruments used like the harmonica, tambourine, and big drums help to distinguish each song.

I recommend this album to everyone. it appeals to everyone, especially to rock, pop, indie, and blues fans. Even if you don’t enjoy this kind of music, I strongly recommend that you give it a try. From the album, Brothers, my favourite songs are- Tighten Up, Sinister Kid, She’s Long Gone, and Howlin’ For You.

(My Opinion)

Collide With The Sky by Pierce The Veil is probably the best album yet. These guys don’t take any steps back, they only move forward with faster beats, different kinds of song structures and of course mind-blowing lyrics. Even the songs that I didn’t think I would like in a million years grew on me and I still find myself singing the lyrics to them. By PTV releasing this album, they’re pretty much telling people, ‘hey! I can relate to you!’. This song is full of fast beats, relatable lyrics, solos, duets, and Pierce The Veil’s special touch.

May These Noises Startle You In Your Sleep is very…Odd. If this song ever is made into a full length song, I don’t think I’m going to like it. It sounds too far away, like someone left the TV on in another room and this song is playing. It’s very odd.

This album is dedicated to their fans. I like that because people need to know (not just subconsciously) that people do understand how they feel.  Songs like Hold On Till May, Tangled In The Great Escape, and One Hundred Sleepless Nights are about broken relationships that you wish could have worked out. The First Punch and King For A Day are songs about moving on because you know you deserve to. Another thing that I like about this album is that there are solos and duets! In the beginning of The First Punch and in the middle of Bulls In The Bronx. Their Mexican background really comes out in Bulls In The Bronx which I like since they’re putting their roots right into their music. I think that King For A Day is the only song on this album that has a duet between the guitar and the bass. Just by listening to the guitarists and bassist, you can tell that the chords aren’t easy to play which keeps the songs interesting. Now, onto the duets between vocalists. Kellin Quinn and Vic Fuentes just fit. Their voices and singing styles fit so well that the transitions between the voices is smooth. Tangled In The Great Escape with Jason Butler fits. The band chose vocalists that would fit really well with the music, no tension, just comfortable.

Overall, go buy this album (or try to win it here!) I recommend this for anyone who likes rock, post-hardcore, and punk. Not only does this album have everything that makes a great album, but it also has soul. Albums are a lot like books, and every song tells it own mini story that perfectly fits as a whole. I don’t think this band is capable of taking steps back with their music. Currently, I am in love with these songs- Hell Above, One Hundred Sleepless Nights, I’m Low On Gas And You Need A Jacket, and The First Punch.
