Song of the Week (Revamped) #18-Alone/ With You by Daughter

Daughter are an indie folk band from England. Fronted by North London native Elena Tonra, they were formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France.

Daughter has recently changed up their tune. Although they still have their usual delicately haunting vocals, and depressing yet heartfelt lyrics, they added a poppy tune. Think….light electronic music. But still, the song is really good. Daughter will always have a spot in my heart no matter what.

Favourite part:

I hate sleeping alone
Terrified with the lights out
I hate living alone
Talking to myself is boring conversation
Me and I are not friends
She is only an acquaintance
I hate dreaming of being alone
Cause you are never there
Just a shadowy figure with a blank face
Kicking me out of his place
I hate walking alone
I should get a dog or something

Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, known by his stage name Logic, is an American rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer.

The first time I heard this song I assumed what you would. This is about a girl who stole this guy’s heart and how he’s ruined because of it. And in a sense, I’m right but I’m also wrong. Logic uses a unique and creative way to talk about his problems and struggles and I seriously respect him for it. But what makes him amazing is the way he explains the song and what it truly means. Seriously, listen to his explanation because it like opens your mind and shit.

Favourite part:

Goddamn, took me as young man
Everyday I wonder who I am, who will I be, where will I go
What will they write upon my grave?
A free man born as a king, who died as a slave
But everything he gave her was for nothing though
Oh no I can’t fade that shit I gotta let you go
You got me tripping like a flight to Vegas
All this shit you got me doing man it’s outrageous

Song of the Week (Revamped) #6-I Like You so Much Better when You’re Naked by Ida Maria

song of the week revamped

Song of the Week is a weekly meme of some of my current favourite songs or songs that I can’t get out of my head. Leave your favourite songs and I’ll be sure to check them out.

Ida Maria Børli Sivertsen, better known simply as Ida Maria, is a Norwegian musician and songwriter. Her first album, Fortress Round My Heart, was released in 2008.

Everything’s better when you’re naked. This song is upbeat and feisty. It’s hard to believe that no one knows about her and her classic ‘cherry bomb’ vocals. This song is just pure fun.

Favourite part:

What the hell do I do this for?
You’re just another guy
OK, you’re kind of sexy
But you’re not really special

But I won’t mind
If you take me home
Come on, take me home

I won’t mind
if you take off all your clothes
Come on, take them off

Song of the Week#39-Born to Love You by Skylight (The Bonus Interview Edition)

song of the week

This is a weekly meme that’s for the most part, the same as Song Of The Day except each week there will be a different ‘edition’ and it’s going to be updated once a week. This week’s edition is: The bonus interview! Interviews are not my strong point, they make me nervous and I always try to come up with fun questions but never do. However, with Skylight and more importantly, their publicist, Genevieve for being so kind about it! I had fun reading their answers and listening to Made for More and album you should all go check out!

wpid-Skylight-Cover.jpg

Skylight’s roots can be traced back to 2009 when three like-minded musos – Greg Jorden (vocals and guitar), Peter Klein (bass) and Bradley Cumming (drums) and later Wesley Ayliffe (guitar and back-up vocals) – joined forces after performing at a music event. The trio soon began writing music together, the chemistry instantaneous, and their individual visions started to take form.

Skylight are such a great band and I love their music, truly. It’s so soothing and warm and I can’t get enough! Born to Love You might be your favourite song come this summer. It’s so light and sweet and just screams not only summer but happiness which I think, is what everyone is going to need this summer.

My favourite part of the song is:

My heart has seen where I am free

Where you are walking next to me

Lungs filled with life feeling like new Yeah, I was born to love you

The sun is breaking through

Breaking through this storm

Yeah, I feel better now

Skies are turning blue

I’m coming home to you

Yeah, I feel better now

Now, it’s time for the Q and A that I did with the band! They are so nice and some of their answers are quite funny like Greg losing his capo before a gig. Hopefully you all like their answers as well!

1. What’s the story behind your band’s name?

Greg: We wanted a name that captured what we want to do with our music… let some light in.

Brad: We believe there is a message of hope that we need to get out. A Skylight lets light in where it is dark, I guess we are trying to do the same.

2. I know a lot of musicians have tattoos dedicated to albums and songs, ect. I was wondering if any of you have tattoos dedicated to something music related. If so what do they say?

Greg: I don’t have one, but if I did I’d love ‘free’ tattooed on my arm. That’s how I feel when I play music.

Wesley:  No tattoos… I can never make up my mind what I want! When I do, it’ll definitely be music related.

Brad: I have a pair of drum sticks on my right shoulder. No words but I would like to add to it sometime.

3. Funniest moment of musical career?

Greg: Losing my capo before a song that needed it and asking the rest of the band to look for it in front of a high school audience

Wesley:  Hitting myself in the face with my guitar while trying to do a guitar sling (flipping it right around my neck). It wasn’t very funny at the time, and I looked like a complete idiot! I’ve definitely matured, along with my taste in music!

Peter: Definitely Greg losing his capo on stage and asking us to look for it.

Brad: Funniest or awkward? We had a Capo go missing on stage during a Highschool gig, I don’t think Greg will ever live this one down. It was on His music stand behind some music notes…

4. Best moment of musical career?

Greg: The best moments in my musical career are the ones that not many get to see – the jokes, the prayers, hanging out, jamming, and just doing life together with the band… that’s the best part about being in Skylight.

Wesley:  We’re all very close friends in the band – for me there is nothing better than getting to play music with three of my best friends; even if it’s just a rehearsal. That’s what making music is about.

Peter: Playing at Joburg day back in 2010.

Brad: I’m tempted to say it was when we played at Joburg Day in front of 18000 people but the truth is when we’ve played a gig for 15 people it’s been as much fun. It comes down to being able to play music with amazing friends.

5. Since I’m a high school student, I was just wondering what type of high schooler you guys were like? (Eg. The jock, the writer, the nerd, the roamer, ect.)

Greg: The guy who didn’t fit in.

Wesley:  I was the coolest kid in school! (I was also homeschooled).

Peter: The NERD…still am!

Brad: The guy who got along with everyone.

The All-American Rejects are an American rock band formed in Stillwater, Oklahoma in 1999.[5] The band consists of lead vocalist, bass guitarist, and pianist Tyson Ritter, lead guitarist and backing vocalist Nick Wheeler, rhythm guitarist and backing vocalist Mike Kennerty, and drummer and percussionist Chris Gaylor. Gives You Hell is off of their album, When the World Comes Down.

It’s like whenever I actually enjoy going to school, school just wants to give me hell and this song completely describes my relationship with school. And people. But mostly school.

My favourite part is:

Tomorrow you’ll be thinking to yourself
Where’d it all go wrong?
But the list goes on and on

And truth be told I miss you
And truth be told I’m lying

When you see my face
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you walk my way
Hope it gives you hell
Hope it gives you hell
When you find a man that’s worth a damn and treats you well
Then he’s a fool, you’re just as well
Hope it gives you hell

Song of the Week#14-Forever Halloween by The Maine (F Edition+Halloween Edition)

This is a weekly meme that’s for the most part, the same as Song Of The Week except each week there will be for the alphabet/numbers! and it’s going to be updated once a week. This week’s edition is: F! But it’s also the Halloween Edition!

The Maine  is an American rock band from Tempe, Arizona. Formed in 2007. The band was founded by Pat Kirch (drummer) and Garrett Nickelsen (Bassist) when they were still in high school. Even though they’re from Arizona, the name Maine comes from a song by a very respected band called, Ivory. They got their name from their song, The Coast Of Maine (great song as well). Forever Halloween is off of their album, Forever Halloween.

Happy Halloween! Get your costumes out! Try to scare the crap out of little children and most of all! DON’T FORGET THE CANDY! Gosh, how I love candy. Because I do love it. Like, a lot and could probably eat it everyday for the rest of my life if I could. But anyway, this is a song by my favourite band. It’s all about Halloween and going back to a time where you could pretend to be anything you wanted and be a kid.

My favourite part is:

Kids in costumes
Dressed like Kings and Queens
Little monsters
Walking down my street
In this place I’ll
Be anything but me
So you be brave and
I’ll still be eighteen

So just this once
Yeah just for now
yeah you can be anything
Anything in the world
And darling don’t
Don’t you start to scream
It doesn’t mean anything
It’s just make believe

You can listen to Forever Halloween here.

Song of the Week#13-Embracing Facts by Into It. Over It. (School Edition-E)

school

This is a weekly meme that’s for the most part, the same as Song Of The Week except each week there will be for the alphabet/numbers! and it’s going to be updated once a week. This week’s edition is: E!

Into It. Over It is a one-man band from Chicago, Illinois that started out in 2007. Evan Thomas Weiss started out by writing and recording songs every week for one year that quickly got picked up by record labels and then became something more. Since then, Weiss has released three split EPS and five albums. Embracing Facts is off of his album Proper.

Okay, so this song might not have to do anything with school but guess what? I don’t care. And you shouldn’t either because the record label is giving this away as a free download. See, not caring can be a good thing sometimes.

My favourite part is:

How the hell could I have been so weak?
A plush backseat flips my switch on to speak and says
“Your common sense will never pay the rent.”
Harsh words from a path that I seldom choose.
I’ll scream at the wall as you sing the blues
To the minor chords that you and I simply can’t afford
