Song of the Week (Revamped) #18-Alone/ With You by Daughter

song of the week revamped

Song of the Week is a weekly meme of some of my current favourite songs or songs that I can’t get out of my head. Leave your favourite songs and I’ll be sure to check them out.

Daughter are an indie folk band from England. Fronted by North London native Elena Tonra, they were formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France.

Daughter has recently changed up their tune. Although they still have their usual delicately haunting vocals, and depressing yet heartfelt lyrics, they added a poppy tune. Think….light electronic music. But still, the song is really good. Daughter will always have a spot in my heart no matter what.

Favourite part:

I hate sleeping alone
Terrified with the lights out
I hate living alone
Talking to myself is boring conversation
Me and I are not friends
She is only an acquaintance
I hate dreaming of being alone
Cause you are never there
Just a shadowy figure with a blank face
Kicking me out of his place
I hate walking alone
I should get a dog or something

If You Leave - Daughter

Daughter is an indie/folk band from England. They have created songs that are filled with tales of heartbreak and death that are sung in a sweet, soft tune. Currently, the band has out three EPs-Demos, His Young Heart, and The Wild Youth and one album-If You Leave. Members are: Elena Tonra  (vocals, guitar), Igor Haefeli  (guitar), and Remi Aguilella (drums).

opinion

Daughter is the type of band that understands you without trying to. They’re trying to express themselves with their music but along the way they express you too. Or at least, they do for me. If You Leave is a story about heartbreak. It’s about feeding the monster inside of you, something, we all have and realizing that we’re still human. This entire album can easily become the backdrop for a heartfelt tv show drama. (Seriously, close your eyes and you can imagine Human, Amsterdam, Shallow as the music for Grey’s or supernatural or something super intense and heartbreaking movie/tv show.) I know I’ve been handing out high ratings for a lot of albums lately, but this band, Daughter, completely deserve it. And I cannot wait to see them this fall (hopefully).

I adore the way Daughter can make me feel with the single beat of a drum, a few chords from a guitar, and lovely sung high notes. In most of the songs, there’s an echo attached to the vocals which is something I’m very picky about. I can’t stand when songs have an echo that is useless to the song but with Daughter, they pull it off. Everything compliments each other rather than takes away from the songs. I also love how easy it is to relate to their music with lyrics about broken romances in Still with lyrics, “Biting words like a wolf howling. Hate is spitting out each others mouths. But we’re still sleeping like we’re lovers.” And no matter what, people are still human in Human with, “Buried deep within, there’s a human.”

If You Leave by Daughter is a gorgeous album. There’s heartache, love, life, death, and well…Youth and growing up that’s shown throughout the album. I recommend this album to everyone especially to lovers of indie and acoustic music. Favourite songs off of this album are: Still, Human, Youth, and Shallows.

Song Of The Day#46-Love By Daughter

When I first started this meme, Daughter was the second band that I posted about. Even though I enjoy run more than Love, I still really like this song. There is just so much meaning and power behind this and this song makes me think about a party.

Daughter is an indie/folk band from England. They have created songs that are filled with tales of heartbreak and death that are sung in a sweet, soft tune.

Love is one of their most known for songs because it’s about love and heartbreak. About how mean people can truly be with your vulnerable heart. The melody is sweet and haunting.

My favourite part is:

But I don’t want to imagine
Words you spoke to her that night
Make your bodies look like porcelain
You both knew I’d be bleeding inside

Did she make your heart beat faster than I could?
Did she give you what you hoped for?
On nights so loveless, love,
I hope it made you feel good
Knowing how much I adored you

Song Of The Day#2-Run By Daughter

I stumbled upon Daughter by accident. I meant to choose a song by Lydia but clicked on, Youth by Daughter (which is a great song as well). Daughter is a folk/indie band from England that now have two EPs out.

Run by Daughter is generally about a couple running away. Hence the title, ‘run’. It’s also about suicide and heartbreak about a broken man with ‘horrible dreams’.

My favourite part is:

We don’t want to be seen
No, this is suicide
You can’t see the ropes
And I won’t tell my mother
It’s better she don’t know
And he won’t tell his folks
‘Cause they’re already ghosts

At just 21, Daughter has created songs that are filled with tales of heartbreak and death that are sung in a sweet, soft tune. Run is on the Demo EP that isn’t on Itunes.
