opinion

It’s times like these that I remember why Lydia is one of my favourite bands. They produce such great music and have such high energy. Earlier this year, they released their fifth album, Devil (which is an amazing album) this B-Side is just as good. Honestly, this EP has been replayed all of these last few weeks. I just can’t enough!

The EP starts off with We’ll Never Die which is an okay song, but it gets tarnished by the background music which is way too loud when the vocalist is singing. In Do You Remember, there’s an intense sense of panic that makes everything, especially the guitar parts sound very rushed. Lydia ends the EP with two acoustic versions of their most famous songs on their album, The Exit and Devil. Unfortunately, these acoustic versions don’t do the originals any justice. They both sound contrived rather than their signature relaxed mood.

However, What’s the Worst that Could Happen? is probably the song that best describes Lydia’s music now and that’s really comfortable and very light. The song is actually pretty slow and starts off quiet with great drumming and lovely lyrics. I feel like Wish You Well could be the second part of Back to Bed because it’s also just as sweet. All of the “oh ah oh oh’s” don’t bother me, they feel perfect and go well with the song.

Devil B-Side is a lovely EP that I recommend to everyone. My favourite songs are What’s the Worst that Could happen? And Wish You Well but all songs are fairly good minus their few flaws. They’re all good for remembering the good old summer days and summer loves. Two things Lydia does well.

ATRFinal Favourite Lyrics:

1. A hero of war is that what they see

Just medals and scars, so damn proud of me

And I brought home that flag, now it gathers dust

But it’s a flag that I love, it’s the only flag I trust
(Taken from, Hero Of War)

2. 1000 miles away
There’s nothing left to say
But so much left that I don’t know
We never had a choice
This world is too much noise
It takes me under
It takes me under once again
I don’t hate you
I don’t hate you, no

1. And did you ever dream
You were something great
That you changed a life
Weren’t so afraid
That none of the colors we know fade

(Taken from, The Ending)

2. Go to hell if you’re reading this and I’m not here
Take your someone else and let me make this crystal clear that,
That I don’t need your help and I’m okay by myself
You can go to hell

1. Love is a luxury
She said “I’d rather be in love than dead”
But now it’s her, oh God now it’s her
She’s the type of girl who makes love… hers

(Taken from, This Is The End)

2. She could be money, cars, fear of the dark
Your best friends are just strangers in bars
Where ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don’t have to worry
She could be rainy days, minimum wage
A book that ends with no last page
Who ever she is, who ever she may be
One things for sure,
You don’t have to worry

(Taken from, Whoever She Is)

3. I’m falling in love
But it’s falling apart
I need to find my way back to the start
When we were in love
Things were better than they are
Let me back into…
Into your arms.
Into your arms.

Devil by Lydia

Lydia-Devil-200x200Favourite Lyrics:

1. I really do hate that place
Because I think about her all my days
I’ve got to laugh it all off, laugh it off, baby.
She says, “Darling just shave your face, so we can be on our way.”
I might go my own way

(Taken from, Holidays)

2. She, she hates winter and apologies.
I found her swimming out in the sea.
You know, yeah, you know what I mean.
La da da da da da da.
But oh, I know where you’re going,
and no, no it’s not too slowly.
But you gotta tell me,
what’s it gonna be? Hey.

And she looked right at me, and said,
“God, I love how you say that.
Sounds so epic.”
She says, “all your friends will be waiting,
so just come back, back to bed.”

(Taken from, Back To Bed)

3. So if you have to think about it?
Just think about it real slow
We’re on a mission for the devil,
Even if it breaks some bones
It’s blue and red as far as I can see
I know you’re going to find that devil
But you’ll need some company

Happy are we, in our own world
Happy are we, bare bones my girl

Devil - Lydia

Lydia is an indie rock pop band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus. Lydia has released five albums-This December, it’s one more and I’m free, Illuminate, Assailants, Paint it golden, and Devil.  Current band members are-Leighton Antelman (Vocals),  Justin Camacho (Guitar) Matt Keller (Keyboard), and Craig Taylor (drums, percussions). (My Opinion)

Lydia’s approach to music this time around leans more towards new territory. Comparing this album to their others, it’s evident that they are  branching out towards lighter, more playful music. Although it’s still clear that Hailey is still (and might always be) the inspiration for some of these songs, there seems to be a more vague sense of romance. Nonetheless, I love this album and I cannot wait for them to come to Toronto. And believe me when I say that you need this album on ‘favourites’ list.

Almost every song is amazing, blown-away worthy songs. And although I love their music and most likely always will, Lydia has added a few irritating things to their sound. One of these things is the whole, “oh woah woah oh oh’ bit. I’ll admit, for some songs, like, Knee Deep and The Exit  it helps and adds to it but for most songs it seems too over-used and forced and leaves me feeling annoyed. This is the case with, Runaway and Hurry Back Tonight. At first, I didn’t mind it but after two minutes of the very repetitive, “oh woah woah”  and, “come on, come on” I had to change it before my head exploded.

Now, onto the Happier parts of the album! Lydia is known for their exquisite talents of painting lovely, delicate, (yet somewhat a little dark) pictures with lyrics about romance, in songs From A Tire Swing, and Hurry Back Tonight,  battling your inner demons in Devil and Knee Deep as well as, of course, learning your shit like in Holidays. An example of the lovely pictures they can pain is with Back To Bed and how I literally feel like getting back to bed with my girlfriend and sleeping for days at a time. It’s a song that is full of playfulness and love with a hint of adventure.  The Exit, Devil, Take Your Time, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing start off with soft, mellowed out intros that work their way into a fast pace and into their listener’s soul.

Everything blends into each other, the guitars and bass compliment the vocals and the drums don’t over power the sound. At some point in Take Your Time  I fall in love with the guitarist and the unique sounds that Justin Camacho plays. I adore Lydia which is why I buy their music without having to listen to it first.

As always, a beautiful album made by a talented band. You don’t need to listen to their old stuff to truly appreciate their music and unique sound. I love all these songs but I keep getting Devil, Back To Bed, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing stuck in my head (which is fine by me). I would definitely say that these are my favourite songs and I recommend this album to everyone. Whether you mostly just listen to rap, pop, indie, punk, etc. Lydia will somehow touch your heart.

Song Of The Day#55-Knee Deep By Lydia

Lydia-Devil-200x200

Lydia was the first band that I posted about when I first started this meme. In anticipation for their upcoming album, Devil, I’m going to post another song y this band. I’m also posting this song a day after it was released to the public just because this band that much. Are you going to their North American Tour in the spring? I am. You should too if you know what’s good for you.

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus because of a fight that was between Steve McGraw and Leighton Antelman. Currently, the band has four albums released with a fifth coming up. Knee Deep is off of their upcoming album, Devil.

Knee Deep is just so precious! The band has headed in a new direction, using different types of techno beats. Such an addicting song. I know that it just came out two days ago, but I’ve listened to this song at least a hundred times already.

My favourite part is:

Everything I learned I’ll soon forget it.
You tell me I fucked up well I guess I did then.
Just take me back to that day.

I don’t want to wait, I don’t want to wait, I don’t want to wait.
So I take my time. I take my time.
I don’t want to wait, I don’t want to wait, I don’t want to wait.
So I take my time. I take my time.
But if you stay it might get cold.

you can listen to Knee Deep here.
