opinion

It’s times like these that I remember why Lydia is one of my favourite bands. They produce such great music and have such high energy. Earlier this year, they released their fifth album, Devil (which is an amazing album) this B-Side is just as good. Honestly, this EP has been replayed all of these last few weeks. I just can’t enough!

The EP starts off with We’ll Never Die which is an okay song, but it gets tarnished by the background music which is way too loud when the vocalist is singing. In Do You Remember, there’s an intense sense of panic that makes everything, especially the guitar parts sound very rushed. Lydia ends the EP with two acoustic versions of their most famous songs on their album, The Exit and Devil. Unfortunately, these acoustic versions don’t do the originals any justice. They both sound contrived rather than their signature relaxed mood.

However, What’s the Worst that Could Happen? is probably the song that best describes Lydia’s music now and that’s really comfortable and very light. The song is actually pretty slow and starts off quiet with great drumming and lovely lyrics. I feel like Wish You Well could be the second part of Back to Bed because it’s also just as sweet. All of the “oh ah oh oh’s” don’t bother me, they feel perfect and go well with the song.

Devil B-Side is a lovely EP that I recommend to everyone. My favourite songs are What’s the Worst that Could happen? And Wish You Well but all songs are fairly good minus their few flaws. They’re all good for remembering the good old summer days and summer loves. Two things Lydia does well.

Song of the Week#5-Hospital by Lydia (The Pretty Cover Edition)

song of the week

This is a weekly meme that’s for the most part, the same as Song Of The Day except each week there will be a different ‘edition’ and it’s going to be updated once a week. This week’s edition is: The Pretty Cover Edition. Illuminate has one of the prettiest covers I have ever seen. It tells a lot with only this picture, to me, it shows struggle, strength, and love (for the umbrella). What do you guys think of it?

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus because of a fight that was between Steve McGraw and Leighton Antelman (the two people who started the band). In the end, before their last tour it was announced that Lydia would be breaking up. Luckily, it was only a hiatus instead. Lydia has released five albums-This December, it’s one more and I’m free, Illuminate, Assailants, Paint it golden, and Devil. Hospital is off of Illuminate.

Hospital is one of my all-time favourite songs and Lydia is one of my favourite bands so of course I have to put them on here! And just look at the beautiful cover! Hospital like the title, is about saving someone you love. It’s has a lot of meaning and sung so sweetly. I just love this song.

My favourite part is:

And all I see scares me
And no one knows it, but she, she saved me

So I’ve been sleeping with this silence in my brain
I wake up here everyday in this god damn place
I won’t wait here anymore

It’s still not quite the way it was
But you promised me this is love
So stay and watch the hospital
That’s just across the street
From your apartment balcony
I’ll never ever leave there
I’ll never leave

Oh, no one is watching now
Sing like you just might drown
But always come back home
‘Cause I never got to see you once more, no
I guess that’s all I wanted
Yeah, I guess that’s all I needed

Able Bodies - From Indian Lakes

From Indian Lakes is from Yosemite Valley, California. The band released their debut full-length record, “The Man With Wooden Legs” in the Winter of 2009. The songs that were spawned out of this release reflect the bands’ collective maturity and purpose while being surrounded by music that is otherwise derivative and lacking in any sort of defining positive characteristics. Since their initial debut, the band has been working endlessly, playing countless shows throughout the US as well as dedicating time in the studio in preparation for their upcoming full-length. The next release, entitled Able Bodies, is already garnering wide acclaim with both longtime fans as well as those who have just recently discovered the band.

Able Bodies moves several steps forward in their maturity and depth, while still retaining the aggression, passion and darkness of their debut. Current band members are: Joey Vannuchi’s (vocals, guitar), Enrique Gutierrez (Keys), Justin Stanphill (Guitar), and Guy Samuelson (Drums).

(My Opinion)

Funny, the first time I listened to a song by this band, I thought they sucked. Of course, now, I’ve come to my senses and realized just how amazing they are. This album is pretty much perfect. I mean, really. There are some unpredictable songs on this album like Anything and We Follow. As listeners really get into We Follow, the instruments except for drums and a random guitar string or two stop playing and a small, heartbreaking monologue comes out which is sung by lead singer, Joey Vannuchi. Throughout the album, there are a lot of different song structures that listeners don’t normally hear. Your Son doesn’t necessarily have a chorus, it’s just a story about pain and loss which I think is a hauntingly amazing song. Actually, this is an amazing album and I think everyone should go buy it. Right now.

What makes me fall in love with this album over and over again is the fact that everything about it is so easy to love. From the bass drum that just somehow completes a song to the lyrics that compliment the sound. The lyrics hold a lot of meaning not only to the band, but I also think to the listeners, they’re easy to relate to especially I Don’t Know You and Till I Can Walk by talking about love, happiness, and just how horrible the world can be sometimes. Another thing I love about Able Bodies is that everyone gets noticed, everyone gets a part that shows off their different talents. What I mean by this is that in: Paintings, Till I Can Walk, We Are Sick, and We Follow the drummer really lets it all out and goes, well, sort of wild and I love it. In: Your Son, We Follow, Stay Outside, Breaking My Bones the vocalist gets sudden (sort of) solos and can hit really high notes that show his strength and experience with his voice. In most songs, the bass gets a cool, unique duet with mostly the drums which is a plus because rarely is the bass even heard. And of course, I adore the guitar parts and solos that are in almost every song.

Able Bodies  is something unexpected. It’s raw and talented and just…beautiful. I recommend this album to everyone, especially to indie rock lovers because this is a beautiful album about life and how fucked everything is. Off of Able Bodies, my favourite songs are: We Follow, I Don’t Know You, Till I Can Walk, and Paintings. but I love every song so just listen to them all. Or buy the album and see them live!

Illuminate - Lydia

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus because of a fight that was between Steve McGraw and Leighton Antelman (the two people who started the band). In the end, before their last tour it was announced that Lydia would be breaking up. Luckily, it was only a hiatus instead. Now in Bears Of Manitou),Loren Brinton ( Drums),Evan Aranbul (Bass Guitar),Ethan Koozer (Guitar. Now in Gates),Jed Dunning ( Bass Guitar),Mindy White ( vocals, Keyboard. Now in States), Steve McGraw (Guitar. Now in The Saturn Hands).

(My Opinion)

A beautiful rainy day near the sea. That’s what this album brings into my mind. It’s sad yet wonderful and of course this is a masterpiece. With smooth, rhythmic tunes sung with perfect execution by lead singer Leighton Altman and back up vocalist Mindy White. Throughout the album, lead guitarist Steve McGraw shows his talent and experience with large amounts of solos that are each completely different from the other. With so much going on, Lydia masters quite stunningly an expedition of talent and strength. This just might be their best album yet.

Singing back up is Mindy White, although her voice is beautiful, it doesn’t sway me the way that it’s intended to. To me, her voice is a little flat especially with her leading the song, Now the One You Once Loved is Leaving.

Most songs start off with a lone sound; vocals, a guitar solo, or a piano solo. In my opinion, This is Twice Now and Hospital are the best done. Especially when the whole band suddenly jumps in, in both songs. In song many songs, Loren Brinton excels with his drumming. He keeps pace with the feel of the music, the sound of the songs. Also, the bass played in Fate is absolutely beautiful. It fits with the music but doesn’t get lost in it. With all of that being said, it’s axiomatic that the songs on this album are very smooth and moving. Every musical note fits together seamlessly, maybe even better than December, their debut album (which is really good as well). I especially love how different All  I See. It’s very simple and yet complex with the lone guitar accompanying Leighton and haunting lyrics, All I See Scares Me Cause No One Waits Forever.

When I saw Lydia back in April, they completely blew my mind, they opened with This is Twice Now and ended the night with Hospital (Which I think they did just because I got everyone in the front and middle to yell Hospital over and over again.) It was their first time headlining in Canada and the show completely sold out. It’s hard to pick out my favourite songs from an album that is so moving like this one because they are all special and unique in their own ways. But I certainly love This is Twice Now, Hospital, All I See, and One more Day and recommend this album to everyone and maybe start this album off with those four songs.

tumblr_md53fzohwh1qjcvneo1_500Favourite lyrics:

1. If I can take it away without a choice or a say
If I can never see the sun out my window
If I can call in my sleep if I can no longer sleep
I’ll say this quick to you
I swear that I’ll be, I swear that I’ll be good

If I was taken away before I knew who I was
And I was given a name among your daughters and sons
To be love just to love I think I heard that before
But I love them I do it so to be loved some more
I would’ve loved some more

(Taken from, We Follow)

2. Loving you is never hard to do
But I’m sick in bed calling me dead soon
And if they never bring me back to you
Will you tell me the truth
Will you tell me the truth
I said will you tell me the truth

(Taken from, We Are Sick)

3. Sweet thing your eyes are too tired
Believe me you don’t wanna see the world
The world I start
I could take your picture now
Or I could leave you out and we can stay right here
We could paint a new picture now
Or we can turn it into something else right here

(Taken from, I Don’t Know You)

4. Where is my happy song
And where has my patience gone
Did they take it away
Or did I make it leave on my own

Love never takes but I’ve seen it take everything
There’s no one around when I need them the most
Until your love takes down the way
Please restart my ability to love again

2. Baby just ask once more
‘Cause I saw your door wide open,
but the floor is still freezing.
Hailey, I was sick and I’m still quite unwell.
Tell me it’s you or nothing at all.

‘Cause I stole your soul
You said I’d never be able
But oh, the whole world is still on my string

(Taken from, This Is Twice Now)

3. Now I see.
Don’t you say that I’ve gone crazy.
Because I haven’t gone crazy yet.
I just lost my mind,
But I still got you.

Stay up late so you’re sure.
Sure that I wont stray too far,
But surely that got too hard.
Love is not for me,
I promise.
One more day, just one more.

4. No one could ever wait for you
And no one, yeah, no one could ever
Wait for you, I’ll wait for you

I get from my, my closer friends
But all I see

Devil by Lydia

Lydia-Devil-200x200Favourite Lyrics:

1. I really do hate that place
Because I think about her all my days
I’ve got to laugh it all off, laugh it off, baby.
She says, “Darling just shave your face, so we can be on our way.”
I might go my own way

(Taken from, Holidays)

2. She, she hates winter and apologies.
I found her swimming out in the sea.
You know, yeah, you know what I mean.
La da da da da da da.
But oh, I know where you’re going,
and no, no it’s not too slowly.
But you gotta tell me,
what’s it gonna be? Hey.

And she looked right at me, and said,
“God, I love how you say that.
Sounds so epic.”
She says, “all your friends will be waiting,
so just come back, back to bed.”

(Taken from, Back To Bed)

3. So if you have to think about it?
Just think about it real slow
We’re on a mission for the devil,
Even if it breaks some bones
It’s blue and red as far as I can see
I know you’re going to find that devil
But you’ll need some company

Happy are we, in our own world
Happy are we, bare bones my girl

They are also, currently ON TOUR SO GO BUY TICKETS.

(My Opinion)

Lydia’s approach to music this time around leans more towards new territory. Comparing this album to their others, it’s evident that they are  branching out towards lighter, more playful music. Although it’s still clear that Hailey is still (and might always be) the inspiration for some of these songs, there seems to be a more vague sense of romance. Nonetheless, I love this album and I cannot wait for them to come to Toronto. And believe me when I say that you need this album on ‘favourites’ list.

Almost every song is amazing, blown-away worthy songs. And although I love their music and most likely always will, Lydia has added a few irritating things to their sound. One of these things is the whole, “oh woah woah oh oh’ bit. I’ll admit, for some songs, like, Knee Deep and The Exit  it helps and adds to it but for most songs it seems too over-used and forced and leaves me feeling annoyed. This is the case with, Runaway and Hurry Back Tonight. At first, I didn’t mind it but after two minutes of the very repetitive, “oh woah woah”  and, “come on, come on” I had to change it before my head exploded.

Now, onto the Happier parts of the album! Lydia is known for their exquisite talents of painting lovely, delicate, (yet somewhat a little dark) pictures with lyrics about romance, in songs From A Tire Swing, and Hurry Back Tonight,  battling your inner demons in Devil and Knee Deep as well as, of course, learning your shit like in Holidays. An example of the lovely pictures they can pain is with Back To Bed and how I literally feel like getting back to bed with my girlfriend and sleeping for days at a time. It’s a song that is full of playfulness and love with a hint of adventure.  The Exit, Devil, Take Your Time, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing start off with soft, mellowed out intros that work their way into a fast pace and into their listener’s soul.

Everything blends into each other, the guitars and bass compliment the vocals and the drums don’t over power the sound. At some point in Take Your Time  I fall in love with the guitarist and the unique sounds that Justin Camacho plays. I adore Lydia which is why I buy their music without having to listen to it first.

As always, a beautiful album made by a talented band. You don’t need to listen to their old stuff to truly appreciate their music and unique sound. I love all these songs but I keep getting Devil, Back To Bed, Holidays, and From A Tire Swing stuck in my head (which is fine by me). I would definitely say that these are my favourite songs and I recommend this album to everyone. Whether you mostly just listen to rap, pop, indie, punk, etc. Lydia will somehow touch your heart.
