Song of the Week (Revamped) #20-Ladybug by Never Shout Never

song of the week revamped

Song of the Week is a weekly meme of some of my current favourite songs or songs that I can’t get out of my head. Leave your favourite songs and I’ll be sure to check them out.

Never Shout Never is an American indie/pop band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The group has released Five full-length albums: What Is Love?, Harmony, Time Travel, Indigo, and Sunflower  and four EPs: The Summer EP, Never Shout Never , Me And My Uke, and The Yippee. The band was first a one-man show with only Christofer Drew who started by posting a few songs on Myspace. Now, the band has a bassist who does vocals (Taylor MacFee) and a drummer who also plays guitar and does vocals (Hayden Kaiser).

Very quick, upbeat song (I know I say that a lot but that’s what I’ve been feeling lately) about dissing the person you love. I recently saw Never Shout Never in Toronto about a week ago so I thought I’d mention this cute little song.

Favourite part:

’cause girl you just can’t smile
And I know I am such a creep
Callin’ 24 hours 7 days a week
But I got somethin’ to say, I got somethin’ to say, I got somethin’ to say to

opinion

I really hate to say it, but I think it’s time Never Shout Never called it quits. And I hate, repeat hate when bands break up. No mater how much or how little I enjoy the band, it just sucks that they’re letting their fans down. But this album..it’s just letting the fans down either way.

Almost every about this album gets on my nerves. Especially Aeroplane because it sounds exactly like California only with different lyrics. The vocals throughout the album are drawn out to the point where I can’t bring myself to care what he’s saying or even try to pay attention. I can deal with a few slow songs with a nice beat to accompany it but I can’t deal with slow vocals and then fast guitar and drum parts.

Lady Bug is a really well written song, I love the live version they did on their YouTube channel instead of this one. The version on Sunflower is very loud and not in a comforting way. But, I still like the song itself with the romantically sad lyrics and great guitar riffs. Sunflower is just a really depressing album. Not because of the songs, but because of the band. I don’t recommend this to anyone. If anyone wants to find new music, stick to the old Never Shout Never I think everyone can agree that it’s a lot better.

Indigo - Never Shout Never

Never Shout Never is an American indie/pop band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The group has released three full-length albums and two EPs. The band was first a one-man show with only Christofer Drew who started by posting a few songs on Myspace. Now, the band has a bassist who does vocals (Taylor MacFee) and a drummer who also plays guitar and does vocals (Hayden Kaiser) the band is putting out new music faster than you can say, ‘Never Shout Never is amazing.” With already four albums and four EPs, the band is already in studio with their fifth called, Sunflower. Which will be out, hopefully, some time this year.

(My Opinion)

After a few years, bands change. This is because they want to ‘mature’ their music or they are forced to by record labels. Obviously it’s sad and sucks when a record label wants the band to release music that they want instead of what the band wants. With this being said, I just want to congratulate Never Shout Never for putting out music that they enjoy once again.  Never shout Never has definitely changed, no doubt about it. What really bothers me though, is that I’m not exactly sure if I like it or not.

There are things that I really dislike about this album. Usually, the band’s repetition doesn’t bother me, it sounds good and harmless. In songs like, Magic, Life Goes One, and Honey Dew, the repetition gets very annoying very fast. My least favourite song on this album is California Slang because it sounds too different from the rest of the album and to be honest, if the rest of their music is going to sound like that, I don’t think I will be as much of a fan of this band in the future as I am right now. I don’t know how to explain it except that it is very…Odd.  Another thing I don’t like is the drumming on most of the songs, it doesn’t sound very smooth to me just choppy and distracting. Christopher Drew’s usual high do-do’s are now boring and sound pretty dead which is kind of depressing. I used to enjoy his do-do’ing.

Some of the songs have really cool intros like, Magic, All Mine, Sorry, Lust, and Honey Dew. I like that Never Shout Never steps out of their comfort zone and make music that is very different from what they have released before. It shows that they are maturing and growing not only as a band but as people too. What really makes me happy is that they still have some of their old touch in the music just to make sure that they don’t piss of their fan base. In songs like, Wrong Side Of Town and All Mine they sounds like they could have been on any of his older albums just with a much fuller sound and a lot more instruments.

Even with the new turn of music, Never Shout Never is a band to listen to. I would recommend it, maybe, with caution to new and old fans just because it isn’t what is expected.

Brothers By The Black keys

The_Black_Keys_-_BrothersFavourite Lyrics:

1. I got a tortured mind
And my blade is sharp
A bad combination in the dark
If I kill a man in the first degree
Baby would you flee with me?

A sinister kid is a kid who runs to meet his maker
A drop that spreads from the day he’s born
Straight into his maker’s arms
That’s me, that’s me
The boy with the broken halo
That’s me, that’s me
The devil won’t let me be

(Lyrics from Sinister Kid)

2. She was made to blow you away She don’t care what any man say Well, you can watch her strut But keep your mouth shut Or it’s ruination day
(Lyrics from She’s Long Gone)

Indigo By Never Shout Never

UtCO9 Favourite Lyrics:

1.I’ve been caught at the scene of the crime.
I’m in love with a woman,
But the woman’s not mine.

She’s tied the knot with an acquaintance.
I’m doing my best to be patient.

I wrote her a song but she wasn’t impressed.
She’s nonchalant but she’s so well dressed.

(Lyrics from Sorry)

2. Adolescents learning lessons in growing up
We never looked behind us to see how much we fucked up
We lost our heads instead

3. Bright eyes to the sky
Brave enough to fly
Fear can’t find you if there’s love inside

Song Of The Day#41-Liar Liar By Never Shout Never

Never Shout Never is an American rock band, formed in Joplin, Missouri in 2007. The group has released three full-length albums and two EPs. The band was first a one-man show with only Christofer Drew who started by posting a few songs on Myspace.

Liar, Liar is a song about shoving into a cheater’s face that you’ve won and you’ve figured them out. It’s about figuring out who some people really are and calling them out for it.

My favourite part is:

You got it all down, got it all down, down to a science
breaking hearts, is what you do for fun, little one
but see I wrote it all down, wrote it all down into a song
I’ll break you’re heart in just three minutes now
look who won

you can listen to Liar, Liar here.
