Jess Abbott is the lead singer of Now and Tancred is her solo project. Jess is from New England and has had this solo project in the works for quite a few years now. Tancred is her first album.

opinion

Growing up as a kid, I was influenced by singers like Fefe Dobson, Skye Sweetnam, and Demi Lovato. Their music, passion, and just attitudes were things that I wanted to gain once I became a teen. Now that I am one, listening to their songs remind me of all of the dreams my fickle heart had. Tancred also does this for me. Her songs remind me of just how much I wanted to be the troublemaker growing up and have that great group of ‘misfit’ friends. Of course I’ve grown up since then but listening to this reminds me of what every little kid wanted–to grow up.

The album starts off quite nicely and even though I adore her unique voice and her attitude I feel like it clashes with the tempo of the songs badly. What makes things worse is that most of the songs are really short so they don’t feel complete, instead they just feel as though Jess Abbott couldn’t come up with anything more and decided to leave it at that. In Hard to Leave, it drags on a bit with the drumming being repetitive and boring. Abbott could have added some solos to help it.

But, like I said before, I absolutely love her voice because it’s so unique and enchanting. The way she draws out her notes and adds in random high notes is great. There is also quite a heavy bass in just about the song, especially in The Ring and Allston that catches the listener’s attention. Twelve has an awesome beginning and build-up that is executed beautifully with the sudden stops and goes.

Overall, This self-titled album has brought back quite a few memories for me and because of that I really enjoy this album. I can’t wait to see what else she brings to this table and I recommend this to anyone who also grew up listening to artists like Fefe Dobson and Skye Sweetnam because man, the good old days seem to be long gone! My favourite songs on this album are: Allston, Creases, Twelve, and The Worst Kind.

Carousel - Her & Gold

Maria Sais de Sicilia was previously in Lydia and currently in Bears of Manitou. Her And Gold is her solo project getting help from Blake Kimball(Lead guitar)Tony Robles(Drums). Carousel is her debut album.

(My Opinion)

To be honest, I haven’t heard much about Maria Sais de Sicilia or of Bears of Manitou and I want to say that I’m a fan of her but I’m not sure if I am. Carousel isn’t a bad start for a solo career but is a bit odd. Every so often while listening to one of the songs on this album, something changes that also bothers me and I switch  songs.

For songs like St. Teresa and wildfire, there is a lot of repetition and gets annoying very easily. I find that for all of the songs, the instruments drown out her voice and makes it hard to understand the lyrics she’s singing without feeling the need to look them up. I will admit that Maria has a very beautiful voice and she uses it to her advantage, but for songs like, Magnolia, Someday, and St. Teresa I feel like they are a bit too slow for her voice. If the tempo was a bit quicker I think that it would have made these songs much better. Another thing that makes it very difficult for me to understand the words or even enjoy the songs is that there is an echo of sorts of her voice on every song. Even though I do like songs that have this awesome effect because sometimes it does make the song better but in this case, it just takes away from it. A few songs sound good with the echo like, Happy, while others sounds odd and hard to pay attention to.

Like I said before, Maria has a beautiful voice, I love the different notes and pitches used to show how soft and delicate her voice is, yet how sure and strong it can be too. Take The Lead has a very smooth transitioning between the verses and the chorus which I really enjoy. There’s a really good use of techno displayed throughout the album and in most of the songs. I like that different types of techno is used to help make all of the songs sound different. What I really like about this album are the songs, Start Again, Take The Lead, Carousel, and Happy because of their lyrics. The Lyrics are vague enough to be able to relate to the listeners yet still have meaning for the band.

Overall, I will listen to Her And Golds next album since this one didn’t disappoint but showed that there is a bit more to be learned. From this album my favourite songs are, Start Again, Take The Lead, Happy, and Carousel. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of States, Lydia, and BOY. If you enjoy Her And Gold then you should certainly check out Bears Of Manitou.

Song Of The Day#56-Beautiful Soul by Noelle Johnson

384263070-1

What a fun song that makes me think about blue skies, sunny days, and happiness. So all around just a very happy day. Even without the lyrics, the song is just too hard to resist with its fast pace notes and sweet melodies.

Noelle Johnson is a folk/indie singer/ songwriter. Beautiful Soul is her first EP that is realised.

My favourite part is:

why are you spending all your time on it
Worrying about things, things that they say to you
You are not too big, and you’re not the ugly little thing
That you think you see across from you in the mirror
Love yourself and it will be one small step, but one giant leap
For woman kind

Brothers By The Black keys

The_Black_Keys_-_BrothersFavourite Lyrics:

1. I got a tortured mind
And my blade is sharp
A bad combination in the dark
If I kill a man in the first degree
Baby would you flee with me?

A sinister kid is a kid who runs to meet his maker
A drop that spreads from the day he’s born
Straight into his maker’s arms
That’s me, that’s me
The boy with the broken halo
That’s me, that’s me
The devil won’t let me be

(Lyrics from Sinister Kid)

2. She was made to blow you away She don’t care what any man say Well, you can watch her strut But keep your mouth shut Or it’s ruination day
(Lyrics from She’s Long Gone)

Indigo By Never Shout Never

UtCO9 Favourite Lyrics:

1.I’ve been caught at the scene of the crime.
I’m in love with a woman,
But the woman’s not mine.

She’s tied the knot with an acquaintance.
I’m doing my best to be patient.

I wrote her a song but she wasn’t impressed.
She’s nonchalant but she’s so well dressed.

(Lyrics from Sorry)

Carousel By Her & Gold

1. Don’t be shy, I’ve got time.

(Lyrics from Happy)

2. Adolescents learning lessons in growing up
We never looked behind us to see how much we fucked up
We lost our heads instead
(Lyrics from Carousel)

3. Bright eyes to the sky
Brave enough to fly
Fear can’t find you if there’s love inside
(lyrics from Take The Lead)

Song Of The Day#4-Not Afraid Ft.Leighton Antelman By Matthew Hyland

From the tour EP by him. This is Matthew Hyland’s solo project and this song is really good. what drew me in even more was that Leighton was in it as well. Matthew Hyland is an austrailian muscian that has been touring with Lydia with his brother, Justin Hyland.

This song is about not being being of your feelings toward someone you care about.

My favourite part is:

I’ve got a feeling and i just can’t turn it off
I could never leave her in someone elses eyes
I could never ever ever get this right
Oh now look what i’ve done here, no longer afraid
oh now look what we’ve done here, we’re not afraid
I’ve got a feeling and i just can’t turn it off
And thats my choice
