Daughter are an indie folk band from England. Fronted by North London native Elena Tonra, they were formed in 2010 after the addition of Swiss-born guitarist Igor Haefeli and drummer Remi Aguilella from France.

Daughter has recently changed up their tune. Although they still have their usual delicately haunting vocals, and depressing yet heartfelt lyrics, they added a poppy tune. Think….light electronic music. But still, the song is really good. Daughter will always have a spot in my heart no matter what.

Favourite part:

I hate sleeping alone
Terrified with the lights out
I hate living alone
Talking to myself is boring conversation
Me and I are not friends
She is only an acquaintance
I hate dreaming of being alone
Cause you are never there
Just a shadowy figure with a blank face
Kicking me out of his place
I hate walking alone
I should get a dog or something

Mal Blum writes often self-referential, first-person narratives, sets them to music containing elements from anti-folk, punk or folk genres and tours nationally, usually alone in a little car, but sometimes with a band or another songwriter for company.

With a song that’s so sad yet so relatable it’s crazy that I haven’t heard of this girl before. The song, albeit whiny really gets to you. Why? because her lyrics and the images they create are extremely vivid and smooth that you feel like the one watching the events unfold. It’s a long song but every time it comes on, I don’t have the heart to stop it when I reach my lectures. I just let it play until the crying is over.

Favourite part:

We’re not friends

Friends don’t do the things we did

And the ones you’ve done since then makes think we’ve never been

When is this night gonna end?

Are you lying in her bed?

All these questions hit my head

Hey where’s the whiskey at again

You were discombobulated

When you showed up at my door

Leaving glitter on my floor

But I don’t like you anymore

Dr. Dog is an American rock band from West Grove, Pennsylvania, United States. Its lineup consists of Toby Leaman, Scott McMicken, Frank McElroy, Zach Miller, and Eric Slick.

I won’t lie. The first I heard Heart it Races, I thought it was just  a boring old song. And in a sense, it really is. Sure, you put it on and it’s sweet, it’s light, whatever. But then it creeps up on you (it really does) during the weirdest times. For me, it’s whenever I’m washing dishes or like, I don’t know, making a sandwich. And it just stays there, being chill. Like a stoner who just wants to repeat the same thing over and over again until everyone else is saying it as well. boom da da da da da da boom dat dat dat da da

Favourite part:

And we’re slow to acknowledge the knots in our laces
Heart it races

And we go back to where we moved out to the places
Heart it races

I sold it to a man and threw him out that window
He went boom da da da da da da boom dat dat dat da da
Made his wife a widow

The Supremes were an American female singing group and the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s.

Do you remember the twist? I do it every time I hear this song. This song is an old classic that is beautiful. The supremes are awesome.

Favourite part:

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take

You can’t hurry love
No, you just have to wait
You got to trust, give it time
No matter how long it takes

Malcolm James McCormick, best known by his stage name Mac Miller, is an American rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is also a noted record producer under the pseudonym Larry Fisherman.

I work at a cafe and when I’m opening at 6 am in the morning, this is the song I am looking forward to when I need to get through the day. Although my ‘weekends’ are more like Tuesdays and Thursdays it’s still the same. I’m always waiting for the weekend not because I have those days off, but because I can relax and do shit. Weekend is an extremely mellow song and even if you’re not a fan of rap, you just might like this song. It’s that good.

Favourite part:

I got a little bit of money fillin’ my pockets
Roll around like I run this shit
I got a system filled up with toxins
Ive been broken-hearted, now it’s fuck that bitch
Getting high to deal with my problems
Fucking bitches, getting drunk as shit
But these bitches getting obnoxious
They nothin’ to me though I love this shit
Go long days, longer nights
Talk too much, the wrong advice
All the lights, and call my life
Doctor, doctor, will you help me
Keep me healthy, keep it low, this where hell be
Ain’t shit you can tell me now

Modern Baseball is an American rock band from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States.

Typical high school song. But you know what? You can relate to it because there will always be that one person who you liked but could never have because they liked a complete moron. Always.

Favourite part:

When I moved away from home, 100 miles or so,
I knew a change had grown inside my awkwardly long limbs and bones
That girl who’s next to me, she’s friendly and thoughtful and quite awfully pretty,
But all she has to say is a meat head-themed monologue on why Brad ran away

She said, “All I can hope for is for me to get better,
because all I can take is no more.
I’ll win him back again, we’ll be lovers, best friends.
He won’t need no other woman like he did way back when he was with me.

James Joseph Brown was an American singer, songwriter, record producer, dancer and bandleader. The founding father of funk music and a major figure of 20th century popular music and dance, he is often referred to as the “Godfather of Soul”.

This. This right here is soul. To be honest, as a tubist, seeing and hearing trumpets get all the glory pisses me off yet in this song, it’s great. They’re great. But that could also be because I absolutely love James Brown and that there are also trombones in here.

Favourite part:

Come here sister, Papa’s in the swing
He ain’t too hip, about that new breed babe
He ain’t no drag
Papa’s got a brand new bag
