Carousel - Her & Gold

Maria Sais de Sicilia was previously in Lydia and currently in Bears of Manitou. Her And Gold is her solo project getting help from Blake Kimball(Lead guitar)Tony Robles(Drums). Carousel is her debut album.

(My Opinion)

To be honest, I haven’t heard much about Maria Sais de Sicilia or of Bears of Manitou and I want to say that I’m a fan of her but I’m not sure if I am. Carousel isn’t a bad start for a solo career but is a bit odd. Every so often while listening to one of the songs on this album, something changes that also bothers me and I switch  songs.

For songs like St. Teresa and wildfire, there is a lot of repetition and gets annoying very easily. I find that for all of the songs, the instruments drown out her voice and makes it hard to understand the lyrics she’s singing without feeling the need to look them up. I will admit that Maria has a very beautiful voice and she uses it to her advantage, but for songs like, Magnolia, Someday, and St. Teresa I feel like they are a bit too slow for her voice. If the tempo was a bit quicker I think that it would have made these songs much better. Another thing that makes it very difficult for me to understand the words or even enjoy the songs is that there is an echo of sorts of her voice on every song. Even though I do like songs that have this awesome effect because sometimes it does make the song better but in this case, it just takes away from it. A few songs sound good with the echo like, Happy, while others sounds odd and hard to pay attention to.

Like I said before, Maria has a beautiful voice, I love the different notes and pitches used to show how soft and delicate her voice is, yet how sure and strong it can be too. Take The Lead has a very smooth transitioning between the verses and the chorus which I really enjoy. There’s a really good use of techno displayed throughout the album and in most of the songs. I like that different types of techno is used to help make all of the songs sound different. What I really like about this album are the songs, Start Again, Take The Lead, Carousel, and Happy because of their lyrics. The Lyrics are vague enough to be able to relate to the listeners yet still have meaning for the band.

Overall, I will listen to Her And Golds next album since this one didn’t disappoint but showed that there is a bit more to be learned. From this album my favourite songs are, Start Again, Take The Lead, Happy, and Carousel. I would recommend this album to anyone who is a fan of States, Lydia, and BOY. If you enjoy Her And Gold then you should certainly check out Bears Of Manitou.

(My Opinion)

Sung in a beautiful melodic voice by Mindy White. The idea for this album is something laid-back and catchy with meaningful lyrics. Which is exactly what they achieve with this. Even though a couple of songs are a little too repetitive and ‘hipster’ for me like Time To Begin Room To Run is definitely an album to buy.

In songs like Time Bomb and  I feel like the bass gets lost in comparison to the guitars and percussions. There isn’t very many solos (if there even is any) which I think they could have put in somewhere, even if it’s at the beginning of a song. On this whole album, the two songs that I dislike are Generation and Time To Begin. Generation is too poppy and sounds a lot different from most of their other songs. Also, the vocalist’s voice is too high for the up-beat song. I wish she sang it in a lower key to match the speed of the song.

One of my favourite things about this album is that this album isn’t directed towards one type of music lovers, there are a few different types of music lovers that will love too. Songs like, Can’t Explain, Time Bomb, and Everlasting are edgier, and directed towards more of a punk rock audience. Pop and indie lovers will enjoy songs like, Captivating Me, Brighter Lights, and Generation. The two guitarists are amazing with trying to keep the harmony with the vocals in time while making the rhythm different and the song structure different . I also love the meaningful lyrics that are about trying your hardest and not giving up that Versus The Mirror and Right Or Not are all about.

Overall, States’s first album is amazing and I, for one, will be eagerly awaiting the arrival of their second album. I recommend this album to pop-rock fans as well as indie lovers. Also if you like bands like Lydia, Paramore, Tonight Alive, We Are One, and Sons. Currently, I am in love with four songs off of this album- Versus The Mirror, Can’t Explain, Follow It Home, and Brighter Lights.

Song Of The Day#43-Timebomb By States

I have to admit, I used to think that this band was not worth my time. I thought they were going to let me down because I love Lydia and Copeland was such an amazing band. I was really upset about Mindy White leaving and Copeland breaking up but the second I started listening to this song, I fell in love.

States is a female-fronted rock band from the US that formed in 2010. Two bands breaking up started the formation of States (Lydia and Copeland) which the band puts that they were “blessed with perfect timing.” Currently, the band has one EP and one album out. Timebomb is off of their album, Room To Run.

Timebomb is a song about being who you are because that’s who are are.

My favourite part is:

They said we’ll make you right into a star
Into a star
They said we’ll make you right into a star
‘Cause that’s what you are
I’m like a timebomb rushing around, rushing around
I’m like a timebomb, rushing around
They said, we’ll make you right into a star
‘Cause that’s what you are

You can listen to timebomb here.

Paint It Golden By Lydia

5/5-I think everyone should just go and buy this album on Itunes. Every song on this album is unbelievably addicting.

(About The Band)

Lydia is an indie rock band from Gilbert, Arizona that was formed in 2003. In 2010, the band took a year-long hiatus because of a fight that was between Steve McGraw and Leighton Antelman (the two people who started the band). In the end, before their last tour it was announced that Lydia would be breaking up. Luckily, it was only a hiatus instead. Lydia has released one EP and four albums-This December, it’s one more and I’m free, Illuminate, Assailants, and Paint it golden.  Current band members are-Leighton Antelman (Vocals) and Craig Taylor (drums, percussions). Past band members are- Dustin Forsgren (Bass Guitar), Maria Sais De Sicilia (vocals, Keyboard. Now in Bears Of Manitou),Loren Brinton ( Drums),Evan Aranbul (Bass Guitar),Ethan Koozer (Guitar. Now in Gates),Jed Dunning ( Bass Guitar),Mindy White ( vocals, Keyboard. Now in States), Steve McGraw (Guitar. Now in The Saturn Hands).

There is honestly nothing that I don’t like or love about this album. The only thing I hate is the fact that I didn’t buy this album when it was in my hands!

Leighton has one of those voices that just put you into a good mood without even trying. You just feel the need to sway back and forth along with his incredibly sexy voice. Craig Taylor did an amazing beat for all of the songs which keeps the momentum and melody of Leighton’s voice together and easy to listen to. Even though I love all of these songs, the ones I am currently listening to on reply is, I’ll Bite You, Seasons, Best Nights, and Ghosts. This album is truly just a fun one that shows the easy, laid back tunes Lydia is known for. These songs really are ‘Songs to move to”.
